Save the date for an online workshop on the application of the ecosystem-based approach (EBA) in maritime spatial planning will take place on 19 October 2026 from 15:00 to 16:40 CET. The workshop will provide an opportunity to learn from the recently developed Baltic Sea experience and guidelines on the application of the EBA in MSP, exchange perspectives between the Baltic Sea and the Greater North Sea, and discuss potential opportunities, challenges and needs in the Greater North Sea context.
The workshop will include presentations on the Baltic Sea experience, practical examples of EBA application, perspectives from Greater North Sea countries, and a discussion on possible follow-up and next steps.
The workshop is intended for representatives involved in maritime spatial planning, nature restoration and conservation, cumulative impact assessment and multi-use, in particular:
- Greater North Sea / GNSBI representatives, including members of the GNSBI Working Tracks and Steering Group;
- North Sea MSP Collaboration Group representatives;
- Baltic Sea representatives, including HELCOM and VASAB.
The workshop objectives are to:
- Present recommendations from the Baltic Sea on the application of EBA in MSP;
- Facilitate dialogue between the Baltic Sea and the Greater North Sea;
- Identify common approaches and shared practices on EBA in MSP and the multi-use of marine space;
- Identify challenges and gaps related to the EBA Ladder approach for MARIPARK governance from the perspective of policymakers;
- Start exploring a stepwise approach to further develop the integration of ecosystem-based considerations into MSP, taking into account national contexts, needs and challenges.
