Policy Area Spatial Planning follows up on spatial planning projects of macro-regional relevance. Projects are a valuable instrument to implement EUSBSR and strategic policy framework of the  Policy Area. This section comprises projects that have a macro-regional impact and develop joint initiatives involving partnership from different countries. These projects demonstrate the progress of the EUSBSR and may serve as pilot examples for desired action. In addition, projects enable wider stakeholders’ engagement in the work of Policy Area.

Besides following already established projects and initiatives, Policy Area Spatial Planning identifies project needs and ideas relevant for the implementation of the EUSBSR Action Plan.

Policy Area Relevant Project Platforms

The Interreg BSR programme supports the cooperation of EU-funded projects in project platforms. These actions bring the results of various projects from different EU funding programmes to stakeholders in the Baltic Sea region in a structured way. The actions of project platforms help public authorities and other organisations access project results more easily. They show how the different results complement each other, making use of synergies across EU funds. These unique chances of creating synergies, boosting knowledge transfer and increasing policy impacts are among the main reasons to label project platforms as Operations of Strategic Importance. The latest call for project platforms occurred in late 2024, and 3 of the 8 selected submissions are PA Spatial Planning relevant (Baltic PlaNet, SEABAS and BSR Urban Mobility). More about project platforms:

Baltic PlaNet

The Baltic PlaNet (Baltic Climate-Resilient Coastal Planning Network) project platform is a comprehensive initiative dedicated to enhancing the resilience of coastal communities in the Baltic Sea Region. By empowering municipalities to integrate climate change considerations into their spatial planning, the platform aims to safeguard both natural and urban environments.

SEABAS

The SEABAS (Strategic Ecosystem-Based Planning for the Sustainable Future of the Baltic Sea) project platform aims to establish a Baltic Sea regional framework for integrating Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) into Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP), synthesizing prior outcomes to enhance the sustainable management of human activities at sea while promoting blue economy and biodiversity conservation.

BSR Urban Mobility

The BSR Urban Mobility project platform connects cities, regional authorities, and policymakers in a peer learning network to support the implementation of sustainable urban mobility plans and deliver on EU goals for multimodal, zero-emission transport. BSR Urban Mobility consolidates outcomes from 17 EU projects.
