Lithuania takes over VASAB Chairmanship

LITHUANIAN CHAIRMANSHIP OF THE VASAB COMMITTEE ON SPATIAL PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE BALTIC SEA REGION

 

The VASAB Committee on Spatial Planning and Development of the Baltic Sea Region (VASAB CSPD/BSR) was chaired by Lithuania from 1 July 2020 to 31 December 2021.

Lithuanian Chairmanship priorities

The Lithuanian Chairmanship of the VASAB CSPD/BSR focused on achievable, practical, and visible priorities contributing to sustainable development of the Baltic Sea Region and continued the efforts made by the previous Chairmanships to update the Long-Term Perspective of the Territorial Development of the Baltic Sea Region until 2040.

Considering the spatial planning to be one of most important tools (instruments) for sustainable development of the territories, the Lithuanian Chairmanship emphasized the significance of the maritime and terrestrial spatial planning process as the integral planning process for sustainable development of Maritime States.

In the light of Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the Baltic Sea States topics, the Lithuanian chairmanship intended to initiate discussions about the international relations promoting maritime tourism as an important sector in reviving regional economy, increasing region‘s visibility, giving employment opportunities to young people and reflection of those relations in the spatial planning of the Baltic Region countries.

Mr. Dainius Čergelis, Head of Construction and Territorial Planning Policy Group of the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Lithuania chaired the VASAB CSPD/BSR meetings together with Mrs. Algimantė Treinienė, Senior Advisor of Construction and Territorial Planning Policy Group of the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Lithuania.

Lithuania took over the chairmanship from Denmark.
